Travel plug Australia 🇦🇺

Traveling to Australia? You'll always need a travel adapter. Australia uses type I sockets, a connection that's completely different from Dutch plugs (types C and F). Without an Australian travel adapter, you won't be able to charge your phone, laptop, camera, or other devices.

Do you need a travel plug in Australia?

Yes, without exception. Australia uses type I, while in the Netherlands we use types C and F. These plugs won't fit Australian sockets. Although the voltage and frequency are the same as in the Netherlands, namely 230 volts and 50 Hz, you still need an adapter because the plug shape isn't compatible. The conclusion is simple: without a travel plug, you can't plug anything into Australia.

What does an Australian electrical socket look like?

The Australian socket has three flat, angled pins in a Y-shape, a design completely different from European plugs. Some sockets have only two pins, but even those won't fit Dutch plugs. The shape makes it literally impossible to connect without an adapter, even if the voltage is perfectly suitable for your device.

Which travel plug is most suitable?

The best choice is aType I travel plug, or a world adapter that supports Type I. This way, you're ready for Australia, but also for New Zealand, Fiji, and several other regions that use the same connector. It's wise to choose a sturdy travel adapter that stays securely in the socket and preferably also has USB or USB-C ports. A compact model is ideal, especially for long road trips, campervan trips, or backpacking holidays.

Can you safely use Dutch devices in Australia?

Yes, almost all modern devices can be used immediately. Because Australia uses the same voltage and frequency as the Netherlands, you don't need a converter. Phones, laptops, cameras, tablets, and power banks work without any problems. Just check older devices, which sometimes only support one voltage. For most travelers, this won't pose a problem.

A good travel adapter makes the difference between being able to charge your phone during your trip and not. With a Type-I adapter, you're prepared for all situations: hotels, hostels, campsites, campervans, and remote lodges. Many travelers choose a world adapter to cover multiple countries at once, but an Australia-specific adapter works just as well.
