Travel plug India 🇮🇳

Traveling to India? Then you'll need a travel plug adapter for India to use your devices safely. India uses type C, D, and M sockets. The mains voltage is 230 volts at 50 Hz, the same as in the Netherlands. This means you don't need a voltage converter, but you will need the right adapter to safely connect your devices, from your phone and laptop to your shaver or camera.

Which plugs are used in India?

In India you will encounter three types of electrical sockets:

  • the standard electrical socket in India, with three round pins in a triangular shape.
  • Similar to type D but larger and mainly used for heavier appliances such as air conditioners and washing machines.
  • occurs in some hotels or newer buildings, but not everywhere.

Dutch plugs (type C and F) only fit into type C sockets, but those aren't always available. For types D and M, you'll need an Indian travel adapter or an international adapter to safely connect your devices.

Do you need a voltage converter in India?

The mains voltage in India is 230 volts at 50 Hz, identical to the voltage in the Netherlands. A voltage converter is therefore usually not necessary. However, always check the label on your appliance. It says:“Input: 100–240V, 50/60Hz”If you're using it anywhere in the world, you can use it without a converter. Devices without dual voltage, such as some hairdryers or shavers, are best used only with a converter.

Safe charging during your trip through India

The quality of electrical outlets in India can vary significantly from region to region. Therefore, always use a good, grounded travel plug with surge protection. Modern adapters with USB and USB-C ports are ideal for charging multiple devices simultaneously. This allows you to safely charge your smartphone, tablet, and camera, even in hotels or trains with fluctuating power supplies.

World plug or travel plug India

If you're traveling to India alone, a Europe-to-India adapter (type F → D/M) is sufficient. If you travel frequently or combine India with other countries, such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, or Thailand, then a world adapter is the best choice. These work in over 150 countries worldwide and often have built-in USB ports and surge protection.
