Do you need a travel plug in Congo?

That depends on the type of plug of your device. In Congo type C and type E are used. Dutch and Belgian two-pin europlugs often already fit in type C and in many cases also in type E, but that is not always ideal for every device or every connection. That is why an adapter or universal travel plug remains a safe choice.

If you use an earthed plug at home or do not want to take any risk, it is handy to also look at our pages about travel plug Netherlands, travel plug Belgium, travel plug type C and travel plug type E. That way you quickly see how Congo compares to the situation at home.

Which plugs and sockets are used in Congo?

In Congo you will mainly come across plug type C and plug type E. Type C is known in large parts of Europe and type E is also common in countries with French influence. As a result, the electricity standard in Congo feels reasonably recognisable to many European travellers.

For example, you also come across type E in France, while type C occurs widely in many European destinations such as Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy and Greece. That is why it is smart to search not only by country, but also by plug type.

Do you need a voltage converter in Congo?

Usually not. Congo uses 230 volts and 50 Hz, which matches the Netherlands, Belgium and many other European countries. For modern devices such as phones, laptops, tablets and cameras a converter is therefore normally not needed. A travel plug moreover only changes the shape of the plug and does not convert the voltage.

To be sure, always check whether your charger is suitable for 100-240V. That is usually printed small on the adapter. With almost all modern USB chargers that is no problem.

Why a universal travel plug is handy for Congo

A universal travel plug is handy for Congo if you do not want any doubt about connecting your devices. Especially if you use several accommodations on the way or combine your trip with other countries, a universal adapter is often the most practical choice.

That applies even more if you combine Congo with other destinations in Africa. Think for example of Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Morocco, Tunisia, Togo, Chad, Zambia or Zimbabwe. Then one adapter for several situations is often the easiest.

Buying a travel plug for Congo

A good travel plug for Congo is compact, sturdy and easy to take with you in your hand luggage or backpack. If you are only going to Congo, you can choose an adapter that works well with type C and type E. If you travel internationally more often, a universal travel plug is usually the smartest choice.

For many travellers Congo is moreover not the only destination. Perhaps you combine your trip with Angola, South Africa, Egypt or a stopover via France. Then a universal solution is extra practical.
