Do you need a travel plug in Australia?

Yes, without exception. Australia works with type I, while in the Netherlands we use type C and F. These plugs don't fit into Australian sockets. Although the voltage and frequency are the same as the Netherlands, namely 230 volts and 50 Hz, you still need an adapter because the shape of the plug is not compatible. The conclusion is simple: without a travel plug you can't connect anything in Australia.

What does an Australian socket look like?

The Australian socket has three angled flat pins in a Y shape, a design that completely differs from European plugs. Some connections have only two pins, but those don't fit Dutch plugs either. The shape literally makes it impossible to connect without an adapter, even though the voltage is perfectly suitable for your equipment.

Which travel plug is most suitable?

The best choice is a type-I travel plug, or a world plug that supports type I. That way you're ready for Australia, but also for New Zealand, Fiji and various other regions that use the same connection. It's wise to choose a sturdy travel adapter that stays firmly in the socket and preferably also has USB or USB-C ports. Especially for long round trips, campervan trips or backpacking holidays, a compact model is ideal.

Can you safely use Dutch devices in Australia?

Yes, virtually all modern devices can be used directly. Because Australia uses the same voltage and frequency as the Netherlands, you don't need a converter. Phones, laptops, cameras, tablets and power banks work without problems. Only check older devices that sometimes support only one voltage. For most travellers this causes no problem at all.

Buying a travel plug for Australia

A good travel plug makes the difference between being able to charge during your trip or not. With a type-I adapter you're prepared for all situations: hotels, hostels, campsites, campervans and remote lodges. Many travellers choose a world plug so they cover several countries at once, but a specific Australia adapter works just as well.
