Travel plug Dominican Republic 🇩🇴

When you travel from the Netherlands to the Dominican Republic, you'll almost always need a travel adapter for the Dominican Republic. The country uses type A and type B sockets, while Dutch devices are fitted as standard with type C and F plugs. Without an adapter, your chargers and electronic devices won't fit into the socket. Getting a travel adapter is therefore essential for anyone going on holiday to Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata or one of the other popular destinations in the Dominican Republic.

Which plugs and sockets are used in the Dominican Republic?

In hotels, resorts, apartments and restaurants in the Dominican Republic you'll mainly come across sockets with flat pins, similar to those in the United States. These are type A (two flat pins) and type B (two flat pins + grounding pin). Dutch plugs don't fit here without an adapter.

Do you travel outside Europe more often? Then a travel adapter type A/B or a universal travel adapter is a smart choice. It fits not only in the Dominican Republic, but also in countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Japan.

Voltage and frequency (110V / 60Hz)

Besides the difference in plug types, it's good to know that the Dominican Republic uses a different voltage. Where the Netherlands has 230 volts and 50 Hz, the Dominican Republic works with 110 volts and 60 Hz.

Many modern devices – such as chargers for phones, tablets, cameras, laptops, e-readers and electric toothbrushes – are however designed to work worldwide on 100 to 240 volts. You can therefore use these safely with just a travel adapter. Before you leave, always check your device's label: do you see “Input: 100-240V / 50-60Hz”? Then a voltage converter is not needed.

When do you actually need a voltage converter?

For some devices, the lower voltage can indeed be a problem. This applies especially to equipment with a motor, heating element or high wattage, such as:

  • certain hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons
  • heavy shavers or clippers
  • microwaves, kitchen appliances or devices with a heating element
  • medical equipment that is not suitable worldwide

These devices may perform less well or even get damaged with unsuitable voltage. In doubt? Then take a voltage converter 110V → 230V with you, or choose as a replacement a travel-friendly version that works on 110 volts.

Which travel adapter suits your trip best?

For the Dominican Republic you need a travel adapter for socket type A/B. The most chosen and practical solution is a travel adapter with USB ports. With it you can charge several devices at once, which is ideal for families, couples and travelers who use multiple devices such as cameras, power banks, smartphones and laptops.

A travel adapter is moreover an investment you'll enjoy for longer, because you can keep using it in many other countries outside Europe.

Conclusion: what do you need in the Dominican Republic?

For traveling to the Dominican Republic you have:

  • Always need a travel adapter type A/B or universal travel adapter
  • No voltage converter for modern devices with a 100-240V marking
  • A converter if your equipment only works on 220-240V

By checking in advance which devices you take with you, you avoid surprises at your destination and can enjoy your holiday or business trip without worries.
