Do you need a travel plug in Cuba?

Yes, for Cuba you usually need a travel plug. In Cuba type A, type B, type C and type L are in use, while in the Netherlands and Belgium you are mainly used to type C and type F. As a result, a standard European plug does not always fit directly into every socket. Type C can sometimes work, but you cannot rely on that everywhere.

If you use a European plug at home, it is handy to also look at our pages about travel plug Netherlands, travel plug Belgium, travel plug type C and travel plug type F. That way you quickly see what is different about the situation in Cuba.

Which plugs and sockets are used in Cuba?

In Cuba you will mainly come across plug type A, type B, type C and type L. That makes Cuba a little less straightforward than many other destinations. You also see type A and B a lot in the USA, Canada, Mexico and partly in Japan. Type C in turn you recognise from many European countries.

As a result, it is smart to look not only at the country, but also at the plug type. If you travel internationally more often, you often benefit more from a travel plug type A, travel plug type B, travel plug type C, travel plug type L or directly a universal universal travel plug.

Do you need a voltage converter in Cuba?

That depends on where you stay and which device you use. Cuba uses 110/220 volts and 60 Hz. According to Electrical Safety First, the power supply in Cuba is mainly 110V, while some newer hotels use 220V. That is why it is extra important to check in advance whether your device or charger is suitable for 100-240V. An adapter only changes the shape of the plug and does not convert the voltage.

For modern devices such as phones, laptops, tablets and cameras a converter is often not needed, as long as the charger is suitable for multiple voltages. For older or more powerful devices that only work on 220-240V, a voltage converter may indeed be needed, especially if you are at a location with 110V.

Why a universal travel plug is handy for Cuba

A universal travel plug is often the most practical choice for Cuba. There you not only deal with several plug types, but possibly also with different voltages depending on the location. That is precisely why it is nice to be flexible with your adapter.

That applies even more if you combine Cuba with other destinations in the Caribbean, North America or Central America. Think for example of the USA, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Costa Rica or the Dominican Republic. In many of those countries you also come across type A and/or type B.

Buying a travel plug for Cuba

A good travel plug for Cuba is compact, sturdy and easy to take with you in your hand luggage or backpack. If you are only going to Cuba, you can choose an adapter that works well with type A, type B, type C and type L. If you travel internationally more often, a universal travel plug is usually the smartest choice.

For many travellers Cuba is moreover not the only destination. Perhaps you make a stopover via the USA, combine your trip with Mexico or continue towards the Dominican Republic. Then one universal solution is extra practical.
