Travel plug Ethiopia 🇪🇹

Going to Ethiopia for a holiday, round trip, business trip or trekking? Then it's smart to check in advance whether you need a travel adapter. In Ethiopia, type C, E, F and L sockets are used. The voltage is 220 volts and the frequency is 50 Hz. That is close to what you're used to in the Netherlands, but because of the combination of multiple socket types it's good not to simply assume that everything always fits.

Which sockets are used in Ethiopia?

In Ethiopia, type C, type E, type F and type L sockets are used. Type C and F are familiar to Dutch travelers, while type E is also compatible in many cases. Type L is less obvious and may mean your plug doesn't fit.

If you're looking for more explanation about the different socket types, then the pages about travel adapter type C, travel adapter type E, travel adapter type F and travel adapter type L are also relevant. With them you can quickly see why Ethiopia is not a completely straightforward destination for Dutch travelers when it comes to power and plugs.

Do you need a travel adapter in Ethiopia?

Sometimes yes. In Ethiopia you can come across sockets in which your Dutch plug fits directly, but also type L sockets for which you do need an adapter. As a result, it depends on where exactly you stay and which type of socket is present there.

So if you want to be sure you can charge everywhere, a universal travel adapter or travel adapter for Ethiopia is the safest choice. Especially when you travel between different accommodations or don't know in advance which type of connection is available there, that prevents unnecessary hassle.

Do Dutch plugs fit in Ethiopia?

Dutch plugs fit partly in Ethiopia. In type C, E and F sockets that usually works, but in type L not always. That means you sometimes get lucky, but you'd rather not depend on that during a trip.

Especially if you want to charge devices such as your phone, laptop, camera or power bank daily, it's smarter to simply bring an adapter. Then you know for sure that you don't have to search for a solution on the spot.

Do you need a voltage converter in Ethiopia?

No, you usually don't need a voltage converter. In Ethiopia the standard voltage is 220 volts at 50 Hz. That is close to the Dutch standard of 230 volts at 50 Hz. For modern devices that difference is normally no problem, certainly not if the charger states it is suitable for 100-240V and 50/60Hz.

That applies for example to phones, laptops, tablets, camera chargers and power banks. Before leaving, do always check your device's label, especially if you're bringing older electronics or single-voltage equipment.

Which plug is best for Ethiopia?

For Ethiopia a universal travel adapter is usually the handiest choice. With it you're prepared for locations where type L occurs and you don't have to gamble per accommodation on whether your Dutch plug fits. For travelers who travel internationally more often, that's often more practical than a separate adapter for one country.
