Do you need a travel adapter for Hong Kong?

Yes, always.

Hong Kong mainly uses type G sockets. This British plug has three rectangular pins in a triangular shape: two horizontal pins at the bottom and one vertical earthing pin at the top. This type is completely different from the Dutch type C and F plugs and therefore does not fit without an adapter.

In older buildings you may occasionally still come across type D sockets (three round pins), but in modern hotels, offices and shops on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, type G is the standard everywhere.

A travel adapter for Hong Kong is necessary when you:

  • bring Dutch chargers or electrical devices
  • stay in hotels, hostels or Airbnbs
  • make a tour through Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories
  • want to avoid being without power on location

Which socket type does Hong Kong have?

Hong Kong predominantly uses plug type G:

  • Type G: three rectangular pins in a triangular shape. The same type as in the United Kingdom, Singapore and Malaysia
  • Type D: three round pins in a triangular shape. Occasionally in older buildings. The same type as in India

You can recognise the type G socket by:

  • three rectangular pins in a triangular shape
  • two horizontal pins at the bottom for live and neutral
  • one vertical earthing pin at the top
  • built-in safety shutters that only open when the earthing pin is inserted
  • usually an on/off switch next to the socket
  • often a built-in fuse for extra safety

Due to the British colonial history (1842-1997), the British type G system was introduced as the standard and has been the norm throughout the area ever since. This did not change after the handover to China in 1997, partly because of Hong Kong's status as a Special Administrative Region.

Which travel adapter for Hong Kong is best?

The best choice depends on how often you travel and what you bring.

For a one-off trip to Hong Kong, a simple type G adapter is sufficient. With it you convert your Dutch plug to the right format.

For travellers who combine Hong Kong with other Asian destinations, a world adapter is the smarter choice. If you travel on to mainland China, Macau, Taiwan or Singapore, you will encounter completely different plug types there. The Remodius World Adapter works in Hong Kong and in 220+ other countries, with multiple USB ports so you can charge your phone, laptop and camera at the same time.

When choosing a travel adapter for Hong Kong, pay attention to:

  • support for type G sockets
  • possibly also type D for older buildings
  • a sturdy and earthed housing
  • built-in USB and USB-C ports
  • compact size for hand luggage in the busy metro
  • sufficient power for laptops and larger devices

Power and voltage in Hong Kong

The power supply in Hong Kong differs slightly from the Netherlands.

  • Voltage: 220 volts
  • Frequency: 50 Hz
  • Compatible with Dutch devices: yes

The voltage in Hong Kong is 10 volts lower than in the Netherlands (230V), but this difference is negligible. Modern Dutch devices and chargers work without problems on 220 volts. You therefore do not need a voltage converter. A travel adapter for Hong Kong is sufficient.

When is a travel adapter for Hong Kong indispensable?

An adapter is indispensable in Hong Kong when using:

  • phone and laptop chargers
  • camera and GoPro chargers
  • electric toothbrushes
  • power banks and portable batteries
  • hairdryers and straighteners
  • portable monitors for remote work

Especially when you admire the skyline from Victoria Peak, take a tour across Hong Kong Island with the Star Ferry, eat dim sum in a traditional restaurant, or make a day trip to Lantau Island and the Big Buddha, a reliable travel adapter is handy to keep all your equipment and cameras charged at all times.
