Which sockets are used in Iceland?

In Iceland, sockets of type C and type F are used. Type C is the familiar plug with two round pins. Type F also has two round pins, but additionally has earthing clips on the side. These are the same types you also frequently encounter in the Netherlands.

If you are looking for more explanation about the different socket types, the pages about travel adapter type C and travel adapter type F are also relevant. They quickly show you why Iceland is usually not a tricky destination for Dutch travellers when it comes to power and plugs.

Do you need a travel adapter in Iceland?

No, you usually do not need a travel adapter in Iceland. Because type C and F are used there, Dutch plugs normally fit directly into the sockets. The frequency of 50 Hz is also the same as in the Netherlands.

That means you can usually use devices such as a phone charger, laptop charger, camera charger or power bank without an extra adapter. That is exactly why Iceland is a simple destination on this point for travellers from the Netherlands.

Do Dutch plugs fit in Iceland?

Yes, Dutch plugs usually fit just fine in Iceland. This applies to type C and F plugs, which are also standard in the Netherlands. In practice you can therefore usually connect your devices directly without having to bring an adapter.

Still, it is wise to take into account older accommodations or simpler stays, where sockets can sometimes be a bit less sturdy. That does not change the type of connection, but it can affect ease of use during your trip.

Do you need a voltage converter in Iceland?

No, you usually do not need a voltage converter. In Iceland the standard voltage is 230 volts at 50 Hz, just like in the Netherlands. For modern devices that therefore normally poses no problem.

That applies, for example, to phones, laptops, tablets, camera chargers and power banks. Before departure, do always check the label of your device, especially if you are bringing older electronics or single-voltage equipment.

Which plug is best for Iceland?

For Iceland alone you usually do not need an extra adapter. If, however, you are travelling through several countries in Europe or combining your trip with destinations outside Europe, a world adapter can still be handy. That way you don't have to figure out which type you need each time.

If you travel more often in Europe, pages such as travel adapter Finland, travel adapter Ireland and travel adapter United Kingdom can also be relevant if you combine multiple destinations.

Buying a travel adapter for Iceland

Are you going to Iceland soon? Then in most cases you do not need to bring a separate adapter, because Dutch plugs usually just work there. It does remain smart to check in advance which devices you are bringing and whether everything is suitable for standard European sockets.
