Which socket does Kiribati have?

In Kiribati, type I sockets and plugs are used. This is the same socket type as in Australia and New Zealand. The type I plug has three flat pins in a triangular formation: two angled pins and one vertical pin in the middle.

The Dutch plug (type C or F) does not fit into a type I socket. So you always need a travel plug when travelling from the Netherlands to Kiribati.

Do I need a travel plug for Kiribati?

Yes, you need a travel plug for Kiribati. The sockets are of type I and are not compatible with the Dutch plug. Without an adapter you cannot charge your phone, laptop or other devices.

The good news: you do not need a voltage converter. The mains voltage in Kiribati is 240 V at 50 Hz — almost the same as the Dutch 230 V. Moreover, most modern devices such as laptops, phones and tablets are suitable for a wide voltage range of 100–240 V. Check the label on your charger: does it say "INPUT: 100–240V, 50/60 Hz"? Then you only need a travel plug.

What is a type I plug?

A type I plug has three flat pins in a triangular shape: two angled pins at the bottom and one straight pin at the top for earthing. This plug type is mainly used in:

– Australia and New Zealand
– Kiribati and other islands in the Pacific Ocean
– Argentina (partly)

Because type I is not used in the Netherlands, it is wise to buy a travel plug before departure. At the airport or in Kiribati itself, adapters are hard to find and usually more expensive.

Voltage and frequency in Kiribati

The mains voltage in Kiribati is 240 volts, at a frequency of 50 Hz. That is almost the same as the 230 V in the Netherlands, so you do not need a voltage converter. Do note that some older devices are designed exclusively for 220–230 V — always check the label on your charger or device.

Does your charger say "INPUT: 100–240V, 50/60 Hz"? Then your device is universally suitable and you only need a travel plug for the plug-shape adaptation.
