Do you need a travel adapter for Mongolia?
Usually not, but it depends on your plug.
Mongolia uses two plug types:
- Type C: two round pins, the same type as in the Netherlands. Your Dutch plug fits directly into this.
- Type E: two round pins with an earth pin in the socket, the same type as in France and Belgium.
Most Dutch chargers are type C or F (Schuko). Type C plugs fit without problems into both Mongolian sockets. Type F plugs also fit, but do not always make contact with the earthing of type E. For laptops, phones and most chargers this makes no difference.
There are, however, situations where a universal adapter is handy, especially if you travel on through Asia.
Which type of socket does Mongolia have?
Mongolia uses two plug types:
- Type C: two round pins, unearthed. The same type as in the Netherlands and the rest of continental Europe
- Type E: two round pins with an earth pin in the socket. The same type as in France and Belgium
Due to the Soviet influence in the 20th century, these European types became the standard in both Ulaanbaatar and the rest of the country. Both types are compatible with Dutch type C plugs.
When is a universal adapter still handy in Mongolia?
Although a travel adapter for Mongolia is not strictly necessary, a universal adapter can still be useful in a number of cases:
- you travel on after Mongolia to countries with other plug types, such as China (type A, C and I) or Russia (type C and F)
- you have appliances with a Dutch type F (Schuko) plug with thick edges that do not always fit into type E sockets
- you stay in a ger camp or remote accommodation where electricity is limited
- you want extra USB and USB-C ports to charge several devices at once
The Remodius Universal Travel Adapter works in Mongolia and in 220+ other countries, with multiple USB ports so you can charge your phone, laptop and camera at the same time.
Power and voltage in Mongolia
The power supply in Mongolia is virtually the same as in the Netherlands.
- Voltage: 220 volts
- Frequency: 50 Hz
- Compatible with Dutch appliances: yes
So you do not need a voltage converter. Your phone, laptop, camera and other devices work without problems.
Do keep in mind that the power supply in Mongolia is not always stable outside Ulaanbaatar. In ger camps in the countryside and the Gobi Desert, electricity often runs on solar panels or generators with limited capacity. A good power bank is therefore virtually indispensable during a tour through the country.
