Do you need a travel plug for Paraguay?
In most cases not.
Paraguay mainly uses type C sockets, the same type as in the Netherlands. Your Dutch plug (both type C and type F) fits directly into the socket, so you can use your charger, laptop and other devices without an adapter.
It is good to know that in some older buildings and hotels type A sockets may still occur. That is the American plug with two flat parallel pins. In that case you do need an adapter.
A travel plug for Paraguay is only needed when you:
- stay in older accommodations with type A sockets
- make a round trip through remote regions
- want certainty about all your connections
Which type of socket does Paraguay have?
Paraguay predominantly uses two plug types:
- Type C: two round pins, unearthed. The same type as in the Netherlands and most European countries
- Type A: two flat parallel pins. The same type as in the United States and Mexico, sometimes in older buildings
You can recognise the type C socket by:
- two round pin holes 19 mm apart
- a round, recessed socket
- unearthed, so no earthing contact
In Asunción and modern hotels type C is the standard everywhere. In remote regions, simple guesthouses and older apartments you may occasionally also come across type A, a remnant of earlier American trade relations.
When is a world adapter handy in Paraguay after all?
Although strictly speaking you don't need an adapter for Paraguay, a world adapter is still handy in a number of situations.
Travelling onward after Paraguay to neighbouring countries such as Argentina, Brazil or Bolivia, you will encounter other plug types there. Argentina uses type C and I, Brazil type N, and Bolivia type A and C. A world adapter works in all these countries and offers extra USB ports so you can charge your phone, laptop and camera at the same time.
In addition, a world adapter is handy in older accommodations with type A sockets. The Remodius World Adapter works in Paraguay and in 220+ other countries.
Power and voltage in Paraguay
The power supply in Paraguay differs slightly from the Netherlands.
- Voltage: 220 volts
- Frequency: 50 Hz
- Compatible with Dutch devices: yes
The voltage in Paraguay is 10 volts lower than in the Netherlands (230V), but this difference is negligible. Modern Dutch devices and chargers work without any problems on 220 volts. So you don't need a voltage converter.
Power outages are not uncommon in Paraguay though, especially during thunderstorms in the south or in remote areas such as the Gran Chaco. A power bank and headlamp with rechargeable battery are smart additions to your travel kit.
When is a travel plug for Paraguay indispensable?
An adapter is only indispensable in Paraguay in specific situations:
- when staying in older accommodations with type A sockets
- in remote estancias or eco-lodges with dated infrastructure
- when travelling on to neighbouring countries with other plug types
- as a safeguard for unexpected situations
For most travellers in Asunción, Encarnación, Ciudad del Este or at the Iguazú Falls no adapter is needed: the sockets in modern hotels and accommodations are the same as the Dutch standard.
Especially if you make a round trip past the Jesuit missions, explore the Pantanal, take a tour through the Mennonite communities in Filadelfia, or visit the Itaipú dam, in most cases you can use your devices directly without an adapter.
