Which sockets are used in Tonga?

In Tonga, type I sockets are used. This type has slanted flat pins and is also used in countries such as Australia and New Zealand. For Dutch travellers this is not a compatible socket type.

If you are looking for more explanation about this type of connection, the page about travel plug type I is also relevant. It quickly shows you why you really need an adapter for Tonga when you leave from the Netherlands.

Do you need a travel plug in Tonga?

Yes, in Tonga you need a travel plug. Dutch type C and F plugs do not fit into type I sockets. Without an adapter you therefore cannot connect your chargers and devices directly.

That is precisely why a universal travel adapter or travel adapter for Tonga is the safest choice. Especially if you visit several islands or stay at different accommodations, you do not want to depend on local solutions or an adapter that you only have to look for on the spot.

Do Dutch plugs fit in Tonga?

No, Dutch plugs normally do not fit in Tonga. In the Netherlands you usually use plug type C and F, while in Tonga type I is the standard. That means you cannot use your devices directly without an adapter.

That makes Tonga a destination for which you really have to think about your power supply in advance. Especially on a far-flung trip it is nice not to have to look for a suitable adapter on the spot.

Do you need a voltage converter in Tonga?

Usually not. In Tonga 240 volts is used at 50 Hz. That is close to the Dutch standard of 230 volts and 50 Hz. For many modern devices, such as phones, laptops and camera chargers, that is not a problem, certainly not if the label states that they are suitable for 100-240V.

It does remain wise to check the label of your device before you leave. Especially with older or single-voltage devices it is smart to be sure that they are suitable for use at 240 volts.

Which travel plug is best for Tonga?

For Tonga, a universal travel adapter is usually the handiest choice. With it you are prepared for type I and you can often manage in other countries that use the same plug shape too. That is especially handy if you make far-flung trips more often and prefer to bring one flexible solution.

If you travel more often to destinations with similar or differing plug types, pages such as travel plug Australia, travel plug China and travel plug Argentina can also be relevant if you combine several destinations.

Buying a travel plug for Tonga

Are you going to Tonga soon? Then it is wise to make sure in advance that you bring the right adapter. Because Tonga uses type I sockets, a Dutch plug is not sufficient. With a good universal travel adapter you avoid hassle and you can be sure that you can use your most important devices.
