Travelling to India? Then you need a travel adapter for India to be able to use your devices safely. In India, type C, D and M sockets are used. Which plugs are used in India

In India you come across three kinds of sockets:

  • the standard socket in India, with three round pins in a triangular shape.
  • resembles type D but is larger and is mainly used for heavier devices, such as air conditioners and washing machines.
  • occurs in some hotels or newer buildings, but not everywhere.

Dutch plugs (type C and F) only fit in type C sockets, but these are not always available. For type D and M you therefore need a travel adapter for India or a world adapter to connect your devices safely.

Do you need a voltage converter in India?

The mains voltage in India is 230 volts at 50 Hz, identical to the voltage in the Netherlands. A voltage converter is therefore usually not needed. Do always check the label of your device. If it states โ€œInput: 100โ€“240V, 50/60Hzโ€, then you can use it anywhere in the world without a converter. Devices without dual voltage, such as some hairdryers or shavers, are better used only with a converter.

Charging safely during your trip through India

The quality of sockets in India can vary greatly by region. Therefore always use a good, earthed travel adapter with surge protection. Modern adapters with USB and USB-C ports are ideal, so you can charge several devices at the same time. With them you safely charge your smartphone, tablet and camera, even in hotels or trains with varying power supply.

World adapter or travel adapter India

If you are only travelling to India, a Europe to India adapter (type F โ†’ D/M) is sufficient. Do you travel more often or combine India with other countries, such as Nepal, Sri Lanka or Thailand? Then a world adapter is the best choice. It works in more than 150 countries worldwide and often has built-in USB ports and protection against voltage peaks.
