Do you need a travel adapter for Nepal?
Yes, in almost all cases.
Nepal uses three plug types side by side:
- Type C: two round pins, the same type as in the Netherlands. Your Dutch plug fits directly here.
- Type D: three round pins in a triangular shape, the British colonial type. No Dutch plug fits here without an adapter.
- Type M: three large round pins, similar to type D but with thicker pins. Mainly in older buildings and lodges.
In modern hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara you'll usually find type C and D. During treks, in remote lodges and older buildings you'll more often encounter type M. You can't rely on this mix.
A travel adapter for Nepal is necessary when you:
- bring Dutch chargers or electrical appliances
- stay in hotels, guesthouses or teahouses
- make a trek in the Annapurna, the Everest region or Mustang
- want to avoid being left without power on location
Which type of power outlet does Nepal have?
Nepal uses three plug types:
- Type C: two round pins, unearthed. The same type as in the Netherlands and the rest of continental Europe
- Type D: three round pins in a triangular shape. The same type as in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan
- Type M: three large round pins, thicker than type D. The same type as in South Africa, India and Eswatini
Type C and D are dominant in cities and modern accommodations. You'll mainly encounter type M in older buildings, lodges and outside the tourist areas. During a high-mountain trek the power supply is often under pressure anyway, and outlets are limited or unavailable.
Which travel adapter for Nepal is best?
Which adapter works best depends on your itinerary.
Are you staying mainly in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, and modern hotels? Then in most cases the Remodius World Adapter will do fine. It supports type C and D, the outlets you'll encounter in urban accommodations.
Are you going trekking or staying in lodges and older accommodations? Then a separate type M adapter is essential. The Remodius World Adapter does not cover this plug shape. We recommend always bringing a type M adapter to be safe, even if you stay mainly in modern accommodations.
When choosing a travel adapter for Nepal, look for:
- support for type C, D and M
- a sturdy housing for varying outlet quality
- built-in USB and USB-C ports
- a compact size for hand luggage and trekking backpack
- sufficient power for laptops and larger devices
Power and voltage in Nepal
The power supply in Nepal is the same as in the Netherlands.
- Voltage: 230 volts
- Frequency: 50 Hz
- Compatible with Dutch devices: yes
So you don't need a voltage converter. A travel adapter for Nepal is enough. Your phone, laptop, camera and other devices work without any problems.
Do keep in mind that the power supply in Nepal is often unstable. Power outages occur regularly, especially outside Kathmandu and in the mountains. In remote lodges power is sometimes only available in the evening via a generator or solar panel. A good power bank is therefore always a sensible addition.
When is a travel adapter for Nepal essential?
An adapter is essential in Nepal when using:
- phone and laptop chargers
- camera and GoPro chargers
- electric toothbrushes
- power banks and portable batteries
- headlamps and flashlights with rechargeable batteries
- portable monitors for remote work
Especially if you make a trek in the Himalayas, with overnight stays in lodges and teahouses, a reliable travel adapter and good power bank are essential. In the Annapurna region, Everest Base Camp Trek or the Mustang area you can't always count on modern outlets or stable power.
Buy a travel adapter for Nepal
Do you want to travel worry-free and not depend on adapters on location? For Nepal we recommend bringing two things: the Remodius World Adapter for urban accommodations (type C and D) and a separate type M adapter for lodges and older stays. This way you're covered in every situation.
Unsure about your accommodation? Ask your hotel or trekking organisation in advance which plug type they use, then you'll know exactly what you need. Traveling on after Nepal, for example to India (type C, D, M), Bhutan (type D, F, G, M) or Tibet (type A, C, I)? Then the Remodius World Adapter largely works there too, in 220+ countries.
