Travel plug Nicaragua 🇳🇮

Traveling to Nicaragua? Then you need a travel adapter for Nicaragua. The Central American country uses the American plug system with type A and B sockets. In addition, the country runs on 120 volts, considerably lower than the 230 volts in the Netherlands.

Do you need a travel adapter for Nicaragua?

Yes, always.

Nicaragua uses two plug types:

  • Type A: American plug with two flat parallel pins, unearthed
  • Type B: American plug with two flat pins plus a round earthing pin

Both types are completely different from the Dutch type C and F plugs, so they won't fit without an adapter. This is the same plug system as in the United States, Canada, Mexico and most Central American countries.

A travel adapter for Nicaragua is necessary when you:

  • bring Dutch chargers or electrical appliances
  • stay in hotels, hostels or eco-lodges
  • make a road trip via Granada, León, Ometepe and San Juan del Sur
  • surf, make volcano tours or visit Lake Nicaragua

Which type of power outlet does Nicaragua have?

Nicaragua predominantly uses two plug types:

  • Type A: two flat parallel pins. The same type as in the United States, Canada and Mexico
  • Type B: two flat pins plus a round earthing pin. Also an American type, used for earthed devices

You can recognise the type A outlet by:

  • two vertical flat pin slots
  • slightly recessed into the wall
  • usually no on/off switch

You can recognise the type B outlet by:

  • two vertical flat pin slots
  • one round earthing pin slot at the bottom
  • used for devices that require earthing

There are no significant regional differences in Nicaragua. Whether you stay in Managua, Granada or in an eco-lodge on the island of Ometepe, you'll encounter the same type A and B outlets everywhere. In older buildings and simple accommodations you'll often only find type A (without earthing), while modern hotels usually have both types.

Which travel adapter for Nicaragua is best?

The best choice depends on how often you travel and what you bring.

For a one-off trip a simple type A/B adapter will do. It converts your Dutch plug to the right format. Pay close attention to the voltage: all modern chargers (phone, laptop) work without problems on both 120V and 230V (see input label). But older hairdryers, straighteners and shavers that only work on 230V will be damaged or won't work properly on 120V.

For travelers visiting multiple Central American countries, a world adapter is the smartest choice. If you combine Nicaragua with Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador or the United States, the same adapter works everywhere. The Remodius World Adapter works in Nicaragua and in 220+ other countries, with multiple USB ports so you can charge your phone, laptop and camera at the same time.

When choosing a travel adapter for Nicaragua, look for:

  • support for type A and B outlets
  • dual voltage suitability (100-240V) of your devices
  • built-in USB and USB-C ports
  • a compact size for backpacking
  • sufficient power for laptops and larger devices

Power and voltage in Nicaragua

The power supply in Nicaragua differs greatly from the Netherlands.

  • Voltage: 120 volts
  • Frequency: 60 Hz
  • Compatible with Dutch devices: only dual voltage devices

The voltage in Nicaragua is much lower than in the Netherlands (230V) and the frequency is higher (60 Hz instead of 50 Hz). This means that some Dutch devices won't work properly without precautions.

  • Modern chargers (phone, laptop, tablet, camera): usually work without problems. Check the input label on the charger. If it says "INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60Hz", the charger is dual voltage and works everywhere
  • Hairdryers, straighteners, shavers with only a 230V setting: won't work or will be damaged. For these you need a voltage converter (transformer)
  • Devices with a motor: may run slower due to the higher frequency

In addition, power outages are not uncommon in Nicaragua, especially in remote areas, on islands and in eco-lodges. A power bank and a headlamp with rechargeable batteries are smart additions to your travel kit.

When is a travel adapter for Nicaragua essential?

An adapter is essential in Nicaragua when using:

  • phone and laptop chargers
  • camera and GoPro chargers
  • electric toothbrushes (check voltage compatibility first)
  • power banks and portable batteries
  • headlamps and flashlights with rechargeable batteries
  • portable monitors for remote work

Especially if you climb volcanoes like Cerro Negro or Mombacho, surf on the beaches of San Juan del Sur, make a road trip via the colonial cities of Granada and León, or explore the twin-volcano island of Ometepe, a reliable travel adapter plus power bank is handy to keep your equipment and cameras always charged, even during power outages.

Buy a travel adapter for Nicaragua
