Do you need a travel plug for Rwanda?

In most cases yes.

Rwanda uses four different plug types:

  • Type C: European plug with two round pins, the same as in the Netherlands
  • Type E: French plug with two round pins plus an earthing pin
  • Type F: Schuko plug with two round pins and earthing clips, the same as in the Netherlands
  • Type G: British plug with three rectangular pins

Type C and F fit directly into Dutch sockets and vice versa, so in theory your chargers work without an adapter. But since Rwanda joined the Commonwealth in 2009 and introduced English as its main language in 2017, you increasingly come across type G sockets, especially in newer hotels and modern accommodations. A travel plug for Rwanda is therefore recommended.

A travel plug for Rwanda is essential when you:

  • stay in modern hotels and lodges
  • do a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park
  • make a round trip past Kigali, the Nyungwe rainforest and Lake Kivu
  • don't want to rely on the socket mix per accommodation

Which type of socket does Rwanda have?

Rwanda uses a mix of four plug types:

  • Type C: two round pins, unearthed. The same type as in the Netherlands and most European countries
  • Type E: two round pins plus a round earthing pin. The same type as in France and Belgium
  • Type F: two round pins plus earthing clips. Identical to German sockets
  • Type G: three rectangular pins in a triangular shape. The same type as in the UK and East Africa

Which type you encounter depends on the location:

  • In older accommodations and local guesthouses mainly type C, E and F (Belgian colonial past)
  • In modern hotels and new buildings more often type G (British-oriented standardisation)
  • In Kigali a mix of all types
  • In remote lodges usually type C and F

Due to the Belgian colonial period (1916-1962), type C, E and F was the standard for a long time. Since Rwanda joined the Commonwealth in 2009 and orients itself towards the English-speaking world, type G is increasingly being installed in new buildings.

Which travel plug for Rwanda is best?

The best choice depends on how often you travel and what you bring.

For a one-off trip with only small electronics such as a phone charger (often type C) you can sometimes manage without an adapter in older accommodations. But as soon as you come across type G or E, you'll need an adapter anyway.

A world adapter is by far the smartest choice for Rwanda. With it you are prepared for all four plug types, regardless of where you stay. The Remodius World Adapter works in Rwanda and in 220+ other countries, with multiple USB ports so you can charge your phone, laptop and camera at the same time.

When choosing a travel plug for Rwanda, pay attention to:

  • support for type C, E, F and G sockets
  • sturdy housing against loose connections
  • built-in USB and USB-C ports
  • compact size for hand luggage or safari backpack
  • enough power for laptops and larger devices

Power and voltage in Rwanda

The power supply in Rwanda is identical to the Netherlands.

  • Voltage: 230 volts
  • Frequency: 50 Hz
  • Compatible with Dutch devices: yes

The voltage and frequency in Rwanda are the same as in the Netherlands. So you don't need a voltage converter. A travel plug for Rwanda is enough.

It is good to know that power outages occur regularly in Rwanda, especially outside Kigali and in remote lodges in Volcanoes National Park or Nyungwe Forest. Some eco-lodges have only limited power supply at set times of the day. A power bank and a headlamp with rechargeable battery are smart additions to your travel kit.

When is a travel plug for Rwanda indispensable?

An adapter is indispensable in Rwanda when using:

  • phone and laptop chargers
  • cameras and GoPro chargers for your gorilla trek
  • electric toothbrushes
  • power banks and portable batteries
  • headlamps and flashlights with rechargeable battery
  • portable monitors for remote work

Especially if you do a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park, spot chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest, relax by Lake Kivu, or visit the impressive Kigali Genocide Memorial, a reliable travel plug plus power bank is handy to keep your equipment and cameras charged at all times, even during power outages.

Buying a travel plug for Rwanda

Want to travel carefree and not depend on adapters on location? Then choose a reliable travel plug or world adapter suitable for Rwanda.

With the right adapter you avoid loose connections, non-working devices and unnecessary stress during your trip. Travelling onward after Rwanda, for example to Uganda (type G), Kenya (type G) or Tanzania (type D and G)? Then a world adapter covers all these types at once. The Remodius World Adapter works in 220+ countries.
