Do you need a travel adapter for the Solomon Islands?

Yes, always.

The Solomon Islands use two plug types:

  • Type G: British plug with three rectangular pins
  • Type I: Australian plug with two angled pins in an inverted V shape plus earth pin

Both types are completely different from the Dutch type C and F plugs and therefore do not fit without an adapter. Which type you come across depends on where you stay and how old or new the building is.

A travel adapter for the Solomon Islands is essential when you:

  • bring Dutch chargers or electrical appliances
  • stay in hotels, eco-lodges or guesthouses in Honiara or neighbouring islands
  • dive at Iron Bottom Sound or the WWII wrecks
  • take a round trip across Guadalcanal, Malaita or the Western Province

Which socket type do the Solomon Islands have?

The Solomon Islands use a mix of two plug types:

  • Type G: three rectangular pins in a triangular shape. The same type as in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong
  • Type I: three pins in an inverted V shape. The same type as in Australia and New Zealand

Which type you come across depends on the location:

  • In older colonial buildings and government buildings often type G (British colonial legacy until 1978)
  • In new buildings, hotels and modern accommodations more often type I (Australian influence)
  • In Honiara a mix of both types
  • On remote islands often type I due to proximity to Australia

Due to the British colonial history (British Solomon Islands, 1893-1978), type G was originally the standard. Since independence and the growing trade relations with Australia, type I is increasingly being installed in new buildings.

Which travel adapter for the Solomon Islands is best?

The best choice depends on how often you travel and what you bring.

For a one-off trip, a universal travel adapter that supports both type G and type I is sufficient. With only a type G adapter you run the risk of being stuck in a modern hotel room with a type I socket, and vice versa.

A universal travel adapter is by far the smartest choice for the Solomon Islands. With it you are prepared for both plug types, no matter where you stay. The Remodius Universal Travel Adapter works in the Solomon Islands and in 220+ other countries, with multiple USB ports so you can charge your phone, laptop and camera at the same time.

When choosing a travel adapter for the Solomon Islands, look for:

  • support for both type G and type I sockets
  • sturdy and grounded housing
  • built-in USB and USB-C ports
  • compact size for hand luggage or dive backpack
  • enough power for laptops and larger appliances

Power and voltage in the Solomon Islands

The power supply in the Solomon Islands differs slightly from the Netherlands.

  • Voltage: 220 volts
  • Frequency: 50 Hz
  • Compatible with Dutch appliances: yes

The voltage in the Solomon Islands is 10 volts lower than in the Netherlands (230V), but this difference is negligible. Modern Dutch appliances and chargers work without problems on 220 volts. So you do not need a voltage converter. A travel adapter for the Solomon Islands is sufficient.

It is important to know, however, that the power supply in the Solomon Islands is often limited. Outside Honiara, many islands only have access to electricity via local diesel generators or solar panels, often at fixed times of the day. On remote islands, power may be completely absent. A large power bank and a headlamp with rechargeable battery are essential additions to your travel kit.

When is a travel adapter for the Solomon Islands indispensable?

An adapter is indispensable in the Solomon Islands when using:

  • phone and laptop chargers
  • camera and GoPro chargers for underwater photos
  • dive computers and rechargeable dive lights
  • power banks and portable batteries
  • headlamps and flashlights with rechargeable battery
  • satellite phones or GPS equipment on remote islands

Especially if you dive at the world-famous WWII wrecks in Iron Bottom Sound, take a day trip to Skull Island, surf on the Western Province islands, or explore traditional island life on Malaita and Makira, a reliable travel adapter plus power bank is handy to keep your equipment and cameras charged at all times.

Buying a travel adapter for the Solomon Islands

Want to travel worry-free and not depend on adapters on site? Then choose a reliable universal travel adapter suitable for both the Solomon Islands and surrounding countries.

With the right adapter you avoid loose connections, non-working devices and unnecessary stress during your trip. Travelling onward after the Solomon Islands, for example to Australia (type I), Papua New Guinea (type I) or Vanuatu (type I)? Then a universal travel adapter covers all these types at once. The Remodius Universal Travel Adapter works in 220+ countries.
