Travel plug Suriname 🇸🇷

Travelling to Suriname? Then you need a travel adapter for Suriname. The country uses four different plug types side by side: type A and B (American), alongside type C and F (European). In addition, the mains voltage varies between 127 volts and 220 volts, depending on where you stay. Good preparation is therefore extra important.

Do you need a travel adapter for Suriname?

Yes, in almost all cases.

Suriname is a unique country when it comes to sockets. Due to its mixed history with the Netherlands and its geographical location in South America, you come across four plug types mixed together:

  • Type A: two flat parallel pins, the same type as in the US
  • Type B: two flat pins plus a round earth pin, also the same as in the US
  • Type C: two round pins, the same type as in the Netherlands
  • Type F: the Schuko plug with two round pins and earth clips, the same as in the Netherlands

In older buildings, simple guesthouses and local homes you often come across type A and B. In modern hotels in Paramaribo and official buildings you more often find type C and F. You cannot rely on that mix.

A travel adapter for Suriname is essential when you:

  • bring Dutch chargers or electrical appliances
  • stay in a mix of hotels, guesthouses and local accommodations
  • take a round trip through Paramaribo and the interior
  • want to avoid having no power on arrival

Which socket type does Suriname have?

Suriname uses four plug types:

  • Type A: two flat parallel pins, ungrounded. Common in older buildings and hotels
  • Type B: two flat pins with earth pin. In modern American style
  • Type C: two round pins, ungrounded. The same type as in the Netherlands
  • Type F: Schuko with earth clips. The same type as in the Netherlands, especially in modern buildings

Type C and F are often compatible with your Dutch plugs, but you never know for sure which type you will find in which accommodation. A universal travel adapter that supports all four types is therefore the smartest choice.

In Paramaribo you mainly come across type A, B and F in modern accommodations. In the interior, at local stays and in older buildings it varies greatly by location.

Which travel adapter for Suriname is best?

Because of the mix of plug types, a universal travel adapter is by far the smartest choice.

For a one-off trip to Suriname you could theoretically travel with several separate adapters, but that is cumbersome and you never know exactly which one you need. A universal travel adapter covers all four types in one device.

The Remodius Universal Travel Adapter works in Suriname and in 220+ other countries, with multiple USB ports so you can charge your phone, laptop and camera at the same time.

When choosing a travel adapter for Suriname, look for:

  • support for all four plug types (A, B, C and F)
  • dual voltage (100-240V) for the varying voltage
  • sturdy housing for varying socket quality
  • built-in USB and USB-C ports
  • compact size for hand luggage

Power and voltage in Suriname

The power supply in Suriname differs greatly from that in the Netherlands and is moreover variable.

  • Voltage: 127 volts or 220 volts, depending on location
  • Frequency: 60 Hz
  • Compatible with Dutch appliances: usually yes, but check!

In Paramaribo and modern buildings you more often come across 220 volts. In older accommodations, the interior and local homes, 127 volts is still common. Always ask your accommodation which voltage they have.

For modern devices such as phones, laptops, cameras and power banks this usually makes no difference. They work on a wide range (100-240V, 50-60Hz). To be safe, check the small label on your charger: if it says "INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60Hz", you are fine.

Devices with a motor or fixed voltage (older hair dryers, shavers, mixers) can cause problems at 127 volts. For those devices a voltage converter is needed, or leave them at home.

When is a travel adapter for Suriname indispensable?

An adapter is indispensable in Suriname when using:

  • phone and laptop chargers
  • camera and GoPro chargers
  • electric toothbrushes
  • power banks and portable batteries
  • headlamps for jungle trips
  • portable monitors for remote work

Especially if you take a round trip through Suriname, with overnight stays in Paramaribo as well as jungle lodges in the interior, a reliable travel adapter and a good power bank are indispensable. In the Amazon region, on plantation visits or during a trip on the Upper Suriname River, you cannot always count on stable power.

Buying a travel adapter for Suriname

Want to travel worry-free and not depend on adapters on site? Then choose a reliable universal travel adapter suitable for all four sockets in Suriname.

With the right adapter you avoid loose connections, non-working devices and unnecessary stress during your trip. A good power bank is a sensible addition, especially if you head into the interior where the power supply is less stable.

Travelling onward after Suriname, for example to French Guiana (type C, D and E), Brazil (type C and N) or Guyana (type A, B, D and G)? Then the Remodius Universal Travel Adapter works there too, in 220+ countries.
