Do you need a travel adapter for Uzbekistan?
In most cases you don't.
Uzbekistan uses two plug types:
- Type C: European plug with two round pins, the same as in the Netherlands
- Type F: Schuko plug with two round pins and earthing clips, the same as in the Netherlands
Both types fit Dutch plugs and vice versa, so you can plug your charger, laptop and other devices directly into the outlet.
There is one exception. In some older Soviet buildings you'll still find outlets of the GOST 7396 type, a variant of type F with smaller pin holes. Here Dutch type F plugs (with the slightly thicker pins) won't always fit. In that case you do need an adapter.
A travel adapter for Uzbekistan is only necessary when you:
- stay in older accommodations with GOST 7396 outlets
- make a road trip through regions with a lot of old infrastructure
- want certainty about all your connections
Which type of power outlet does Uzbekistan have?
Uzbekistan predominantly uses two plug types:
- Type C: two round pins, unearthed. The same type as in the Netherlands and most European countries
- Type F: two round pins plus earthing clips. Identical to Dutch and German outlets
You can recognise the type F outlet by:
- two round pin holes 19 mm apart
- metal earthing clips at the top and bottom
- a round, recessed socket
In older buildings you'll sometimes also find type GOST 7396, a Soviet variant with pin holes of only 4.0 mm instead of the standard 4.8 mm. Dutch plugs won't always fit in these.
Otherwise there are no significant regional differences in Uzbekistan. Whether you stay in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara or Khiva, most outlets are the same as at home.
When is a world adapter still handy in Uzbekistan?
Although strictly speaking you don't need an adapter for Uzbekistan, a world adapter is still handy in a number of situations.
If you travel on from Uzbekistan to neighbouring countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan or Turkmenistan, you'll encounter the same Soviet legacy there. If you also visit China, India or the United Arab Emirates, you'll encounter different plug types there. A world adapter works in all these countries and offers extra USB ports so you can charge your phone, laptop and camera at the same time.
In addition, a world adapter is handy in older accommodations with GOST 7396 outlets, where your Dutch plug may not fit. The Remodius World Adapter works in Uzbekistan and in 220+ other countries.
Power and voltage in Uzbekistan
The power supply in Uzbekistan differs slightly from the Netherlands.
- Voltage: 220 volts
- Frequency: 50 Hz
- Compatible with Dutch devices: yes
The voltage in Uzbekistan is 10 volts lower than in the Netherlands (230V), but this difference is negligible. Modern Dutch devices and chargers work without problems on 220 volts. So you don't need a voltage converter.
It's good to know, though, that the mains voltage in Uzbekistan can fluctuate, especially in remote areas such as the Aral Sea or in mountainous regions. Power outages also occur regularly. A power bank and a headlamp with rechargeable batteries are smart additions to your travel kit, and ensure that sensitive equipment is better protected.
When is a travel adapter for Uzbekistan essential?
An adapter is only essential in Uzbekistan in specific situations:
- when staying in older accommodations with GOST 7396 outlets
- if you have electrical devices with large type F pins
- when travelling on to surrounding countries with different plug types
- in remote areas with heavily outdated infrastructure
For most travelers in Tashkent, along the Silk Road, or staying in modern hotels in tourist cities, no adapter is needed.
Especially if you make a road trip past the magnificent blue domes of Samarkand, the Registan squares, the Itchan Kala fortress complex in Khiva, or if you do a trek in the Tian Shan mountains, you can in most cases use your devices directly. A power bank is handy for long train journeys on the Afrosiyob high-speed train or day trips to the desert.
